"Know when to hold 'em,
know when to fold 'em."

Kenny Rogers

After two years of flat same store sales, the owner of a five store retail chain told us,
"I'm not in business to break even." Like many other business owners, she was on a treadmill from one year to the next, developing new marketing slogans and sales campaigns, implementing cost cutting programs and attending business seminars in search of the silver bullet. Discouraged, she asked, "Do you think I should I close the business?"

Buying a competitor which produced a complimentary product sold to the same wholesale customers had never been considered. “Why would I want to do that?” In less than ninety days a "reverse merger" was completed, and the competitor's brand name was adopted by the business owner who only than six months earlier was looking to sell rather than buy. Both product lines were re-packaged and re-branded, leading to a steady surge in sales
and profitability.

Don’t fold a good hand. Sometimes it's that simple. This was clearly a good fit from the beginning: Both owners had good businesses that had stalled due to increased competition, but because they regarded each other as rivals they just kept knocking heads. Instead, when presented with the suggestion to work together they immediately recognized the opportunity and seized the moment.
